HOW THEY BECAME HEZBOLLAH

Hezbollah is a Lebanese base group with ties to Iran. There political goals have been to create a Islamic Republic, after Iran, through democratic means. As well as participate in foreign and domestic polices. There goal was to adopt an Iranian doctrine as a solution to Lebanese political malaise, which included the USE OF TERROR as a means of attaining political objective. This doctrine later became Hezbollah manifesto.

The objectives are to drive the Israel military out of the southern Lebanon and to establish an Islamic state encompassing Lebanon and Israel. As well as getting rid of western influences in the Middle East.

HEZBOLLAH LEADERSHIP AND STRUCTURE

Sheikh Muhammed Hussein Fadlallah acts as the spritual father of Hezbollah and he also acts as the chief Mujtahid, or arbiter of Islamic law, of the Shi’ites in Lebanon. The current Secretary General of Hezbollah is Hassan Nasrallah with the Deputy Secretary-General being Naim Qassem (Jewish Virtual Library).

The central leadership for the Lebanese is the Shura Council is the central leadership body. “Hezbollah’s top commander, the general secretary, is chosen by a seven-member shura council” (Council on Foreign Relations). The Shura Council is in charge of the five organs of Hezbollah, which are the political, jihad, parliamentary, executive, and judicial assemblies. There is an additional branch titled the External Security Organization, whose main job is to eliminate threats not in Lebanon (UMD).

The Islamic Jihad Organization acts as the group’s foreign operations section, which helps the Hezbollah with making their terrorism reach a broader scale.

The Foreign Relations Department (FRD) is responsible for Hezbollah’s global outreach efforts and it is also designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by the US Department of State. The Department of State states that the FRD “is involved in covert operations around the globe, which include recruiting, fundraising and gathering intelligence on behalf of Hezbollah.”

The Judicial Assembly takes care of “resistance activity” including “oversight, recruitment, training, equipment, security” and other activities" (FAS).

The Executive Assembly oversees the political activity and "organizational management" and is headed by Hashem Safieddine (FAS). In Lebanon, Hezbollah's political sector plays an active part in the government. It is headed by Ibrahim Amini al-Sayyid. "Following the election of Hezbollah ally Michel Aoun as president in October 2016, two Hezbollah parliamentarians and 15 Hezbollah political allies were appointed to Lebanon’s 30-minister government.” (Counter Terrorism).

Both the military and the political assemblies of Hezbollah are categorized underneath the Shura Council, led by Hasan Nasrallah.

A 2011 Congressional Research Service report identified Hezbollah’s “unified leadership structure that oversees the organization’s complementary, partially compartmentalized elements.”* In a 2000 interview with a Lebanese newspaper, Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem said that “Hezbollah’s secretary-general is the head of the Shura Council and also the head of the Jihad Council, and this means that we have one leadership, with one administration” (Counter Extremism).

SUPPORT

  • The funding of Hezbollah partly occurs through donations. Lebanese Shias often make zakat contributions directly after prayers, leaving change in the two-handed Hezbollah collection tins. Hezbollah also receives financial and political assistance, as well as weapons and training, from Iran.

The U.S. Treasury Department has accused Hezbollah of raising funds by counterfeiting U.S. currency.

Funding usually increases when successful attacks are carried out and tend to decrease when they are not successful.

Material goods such as weapons and supplies are funded through Iran.
